Communication: Important for sustaining relationships

Every relationship goes through some ups and downs with quarrels on little things becoming a common phenomenon. But this surely isn’t what you aspired for while forming the long lasting bond. Hence solving the problems and issues that crop up is always a better option than hampering the relationships. For this, you first need to know what the root cause of the problems is. Once you are aware of it; half the task is done!
I come across several couples encountering such issues and the major reason leading to it is poor communication. And how could one deny this being the reason, when other activities like checking messages, watching TV or flipping through sports section seems more important than your partner. There is a dire need to address the communication gap before it’s too late. Below are some strategies to solve communication problems:
  • Make time for     each other: When you get some personal time, make sure that neither mobile     nor any other thing distracts you.
  • Keep your     tone low: Raising voice escalates even a trivial issue. Hence, make sure     to give attention towards addressing the concern by putting forth your     views in a subtle manner so that you don’t end up cropping another     quarrel.
  • Go     with the rules: Never interrupt when your partner is indulged in some     activity. Similarly when in communication with your partner, make sure not to be distractedtowards some other work; give proper attention to their each word.
Use body language to show you’re listening: Don’t doodle, look at your watch, or pick at your nails. You need to communicate via gestures that you are listening and are not bored of it. Nod so the other person knows you’re getting the message.

Anger is more Dangerous than we Think

“Anger is only one letter short of danger” this popular saying sums up the detrimental effect of anger. Every one of us gets angry. It’s a natural emotion that varies in intensity from person to person. As long as anger is under control and dealt positively, it is considered as something normal.

Dr. Sanjoy Mukerji

If you have difficulty in managing and controlling your anger then it can have a negative impact on all your social relationships. Your partner, friends, kids, co-workers, and bosses may all come to think you’re a temperamental and annoying. Your outbursts may lead you into trouble with your loved ones, your social circle and even your job.
It is a common practice to use curse and swear words during anger. This is really hurtful for the people around. Sometimes when we are angry, we tend to get pessimistic about everything and exaggerate the situation. We must notice when ‘blame shifting’ begins to leak in our speech. ‘I feel angry when you make noise’ can be much better than, ‘You make me so mad by making noise’. This is what provokes us to utter hurtful words which often reflect nothing other than our own inner negative thoughts.
So it become essential to maintain our composure when you feel like our anger level is about to increase. This strength will help us to achieve our goals in business as well as in personal relationships because by remaining calm we would be able to channelize our energy more efficiently towards the things that matter the most.
It is advised to take responsibility for your anger and avoid blaming others. Putting the blame on others provides fuel to your anger.

5 ways to fight Depression

It is a myth that you could overcome depression by gulping the antidepressant pills. The best possible ways of getting over depression is through a change in mood which is possible by taking up the activities that make you happy. These could include tracking your hobby, listening to musing or even planning a reunion with friends.

Below listed are the best ways resisting depression:

1. Get enough sleep
Lack of sound and comfortable sleep could put you in a bad mood. Researchers have suggested that disturbances in circadian rhythms have been linked to depression. Thus, a good sleep can solve majority of depression related problems

2. Workout
Exercise is a must for one and all for the fact that apart from improving general health, it is highly effective in boosting the mood. It has been found that 15 minutes of exercise greatly benefited in reducing the patients’ symptoms of depression as well as cortisol (stress hormone) levels.

3. Regulate your blood sugar
Sugar and depression are interconnected. Consume sweet stuff and you would witness one or more of mentioned symptoms: fatigue, irritability, dizziness, insomnia, excessive sweating (especially at night), poor concentration and forgetfulness, excessive thirst and depression. Hence, balancing your blood sugar is key to prevent depression.

4. Consume healthy fats
Researchers have found that consumption of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids is very effective in reducing the symptoms of depression. Vegetarians could opt for flaxseed and walnuts to obtain omega-3s.

5. Find passion in life
Passion drives us! Eat healthy, get enough sleep, follow exercise routine but a lack of sense of purpose could keep you from actually enjoying life. According to Blue Zones, people who have a sense of purpose live up to seven years longer than those who don’t.

Depression and loneliness are often two sides of the same coin and creates a negative thought process. Depression often leads to loneliness and vice versa. When someone feels lonely, they tend to create and put themselves in a cocoon, detached from the real one. Loneliness occurs when someone is neglected. Feeling lonely is a common phenomenon and can be experienced by any age or gender. Here are some tips to deal with loneliness in healthiest ways.
Overcoming your emotions:  Loneliness triggers because in-explicit emotions gushes through your mind making it difficult to perceive optimistically. Avoid thinking emotionally for a while and keep aside the disturbing thoughts and think of the good things that persist in your life.
Talk a long walk:  Seek for solitude for a short period of time in order to develop your own will that can make you feel rejuvenated. Help yourself to change your state of mind by going for a walk or meditating.
Focus on productive activity:  You can walk down the street sobbing how lonely and hopeless life you have or you can think of things you are blessed with. Start observing things that mean something in your life and spend time on activities that will prove to be productive.Read your favourite books or indulge yourself in learning something new.
Get some sunlight:  Go for a morning walk or jogging, exposure to morning sunlight will increase the level of vitamin D in your body. Vitamin D helps fight depression by giving you energy and relaxing your skin pours.

Beat Loneliness with Music:  Listening to the pleasant and joyful music will help reverse your lonely mood. The brain is programmed in such a way that thinking about one bad thing recollects another and music provides a great intervention and breaks this sequence. When you’re concentrating on the music you hear, then it’s strenuous to focus on other negative thoughts. Listening to your favourite music boosts levels of the hormone dopamine. Dopamine makes us excited and motivates us.
Set a Goal:  Set an aim as to what you want to achieve in life and work on ideas that would help you progress.
Be Optimistic:  Optimism captivates positive energy, and at some or the other point you get what you sow, then why not surround yourself with positivity.
Spend time with loved ones:  Loved ones are usually available and may provide an exceptional outlet to be you without worrying of being judged. Welcome your loved ones to comfort you at the times of loneliness, and build a strong companionship with them.
Keep in touch with you own self:  Know thyself and for that you need to be in touching with you true self. Meditation or just being silent for sometime everyday can really help in knowing yourself much better.
Let go of things:  Curiosity makes things worse. Stop trying to know everything around you that will only make you feel lonely and depressed. Let go of things that bother you and instead focus on making yourself happy.

Jealousy in Relationship

It is more necessary to sort out our problems as soon as possible so as to make our relation healthier.

dr sanjoy mukerji

Jealousy is nothing but obsessive inferiority complex. We often fail to understand the existence of jealousy in us and it is even difficult to discern the cause of it. In relationship, it is important to know that jealousy will not only break the bond but will also take a toll on oneself. It commences at a small level such as disliking your partner looking elsewhere and can lead to over possessive behaviour like trying to control your partner. You need to percolate one thing in you, be your best and your spouse eventually will realize it, if in case s/he isn't…
Here are few tips to get over it:
  1.    Some people compare themselves with everyone their partner talks about. S/he is generally talking about them you don’t have to take it too seriously and get paranoid with it. Talking about them doesn’t mean you are of any less importance. Comparing yourself with someone does no good; you are only degrading yourself.  The reason your partner is with you is because you are the one but that doesn’t mean you will be on their mind all the time. They are permitted to talk about someone other than you, take it as a healthy conversation.
  2.    Stop over thinking on every little thing, If he is on another call, he is probably talking to his boss or client or some friend or family member; you don’t have to know everything, it’s practically impossible. Just take it as he is ‘busy’ get back to your work and call back later or even better to wait for him to get back to you. Burdening yourself with redundant thoughts and worrying about him will make you suffer. Best way to tackle this problem is to keep your mind engaged doing something productive.
  3.    There are times when we all feel lonely but getting over it is equally vital. You can’t hold on to something for too long. Quarrels may occur, don’t judge your partner on the basis of arguments. People tend to have temperament so give yourself some time and go for a walk to get over it and once you’re back be a matured person to let go of the grudge.
  4.    Giving space in relationship is enormously important. Not always you have to go out together. Meet your friends and let him meet his, it brings life in a relationship. If you are suspicious about your partner’s fidelity, have it cleared calmly. Don’t dramatize it. It might be nothing but your illusion.
Mountain of various negative thoughts will lead to depression. Life is simple don’t complicate it with gloomy thoughts. Believe in yourself and think you are a beautiful creation of god.

5 simple ways to overcome Anger

Anger is highly destructive for both your inner self as well as the relationships with others. This is an emotion and should be restricted to the level that it’s constructive and doesn't cause any harm. People with anger issues often feel as though they have no control over their anger, they reach a point and they just snap. It is only later that they feel the guilt and the shame of their reaction.

dr. sanjoy mukerji -psychologist

Here are a few tips that would prove effective in overcoming anger problems and help in being a calm state of mind:
Eliminate the negative term: Keep the negative terms like don’t, not, no and alike at bay for the fact that these put our focus on things that we don’t want. This really works as language is very powerful and has the power to influence our subconscious mind and ultimately our feelings. I often advice to replace the negative word with a word that lays a positive impact. Example: instead of saying “I don’t want war”, say “I want peace”.
SurrenderMere surrender can ease a lot of problem. Surrender to our ego’s need to be right, to blame, to be spiteful, and to be revengeful. It is very necessary to become conscious, watch your thoughts and learn to separate your thoughts from your own identity. Just remember that this emotion called ‘anger’ has to be used at the right time and in the right amount.
Meditation: Meditation helps us in remaining centred, regardless of what is happening in the external environment. It helps in lowering the thought count drawing out inner wisdom. Experience a state of acceptance, peace and love through by making meditation a part of your daily routine.
Breathing Relaxation Techniques: The breathing techniques have been devised as in general people are shallow breathers and thus air only stays in the top of lungs. These techniques constitute the Deep breathing exercises that ultimately help in getting more oxygen into brain and rest of the body.
Laughter: Laughter is the best therapy! A smile or laugh has the tendency to wipe off all the anger and stress as it instantly lets you feel light-hearted and joyful.
Implement all the above mentioned tips in your life and I assure you of the results.

“Therapy” for a change in perspective

Shakespeare said "there is nothing good or bad, but thinking makes it so." In similar sense what we see doesn’t make much of a difference as how we see it does. Hence, it’s the perspective that brings forth the influence. The perspective alters greatly based upon the personality of an individual. Hence, the same situation or circumstance might be viewed very differently by two individuals for the fact that their personality traits highly vary from each other. Introverts see life way differently than extroverts. Pessimists and optimists highly vary on their take on life. If you have a leaning toward depression, your sense of life takes on that gray sheen. If you are somewhat anxious, everything revs at a slightly higher speed.

Many a times these perspectives keep us from viewing life and its situations, the way we should. Here the role of a therapist comes into play. Therapists are not magicians but what they do is not less than magic either. Therapists seek to help you in shifting perspective so that you can see the world more accurately and therefore lead a more effective life for there is room for tweaking.

A glass half filled with water might seem half empty to some while half filled to others. It’s all about your approach towards life and situations. If a relative change can be brought in this basic approach to life, the big difference could be witnessed. And then all other surface level changes that you bring to life would only help you become a better version of yourself.

A cognitive behavioral therapy helps correct the misconceptions that exist in mind. For eg. If you have a basic distortion like "nothing ever works out for me," then your intentions of investment won’t be backed by the confidence to succeed whereas if you develop the view that sometimes things work out and sometimes they don't, you are likely to try harder and with a more hopeful attitude. Just that shift can change a lot!
